David Marquet – Turning Followers into Leaders

David Marquet Servant Leadership Session What happens if everything you learned about leadership didn’t actually prepare you for your new leadership assignment? That’s the situation Captain David Marquet found himself in when, at the last minute, he was reassigned to a submarine different than the one he had been prepared to lead. On top of that, his new assignment, the USS Santa Fe was the lowest performing submarine in its fleet.

What could have been a nightmare, became a transformational journey for Captain Marquet and his crew. On that journey, Captain Marquet began questioning everything he had learned about leadership and as a result, he began leading differently. His book, Turn the Ship Around! A True Story of Turning Followers Into Leaders chronicles this journey and the lessons discovered along the way.

In this Servant Leadership Session, you will hear David discuss how he began leading differently and what he discovered as a result. You’ll also learn how this different approach to leadership transformed followers into leaders. And when all is said and done, that the real goal of servant-leaders and part of the best test of servant leadership.

Here’s some of what you’ll hear discussed in this podcast:

How can you  give control and create leaders instead of taking control and attracting followers?

What happens if, instead of pushing information up to the people with authority to make decisions, you pushed authority down to those with the information?

The problem with most empowerment initiatives.
